MISS AMERICA 1981 SUSAN POWELL TO PERFORM AT CARNEGIE HALL MARCH 23, 2016
Susan Powell, Miss America 1981, will be singing at Carnegie Hall on March 23 at 7:30 pm. She will join Michael Feinstein as guest soloist for his Zankel Hall series, “Standard Time with Michael Feinstein.” Celebrating The Great American Songbook and Carnegie Hall’s 125th Anniversary, the evening’s program will include works by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and Gian Carlo Menotti.
Since her reign as Miss America, Susan has performed in theatres, opera houses, and concert halls all over the world. New York audiences have seen Susan as Alcamene in Olympus On My Mind and as Johanna in Harold Prince’s production of Sweeny Todd at New York City Opera. She made her operatic debut as Adele in Die Fledersmaus with the Seattle Opera, and returned the following season as Micaela in Carmen.
Other theatrical work includes starring roles at the Paper Mill Playhouse, Sacramento Music Circus, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Dallas Summer Musicals, and the St. Louis MUNY. In those theatres, Miss Powell has been seen in roles such as Laurey in Oklahoma!, Martha Jefferson in 1776, Magnolia in Show Boat, Julie Jordan in Carousel, Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, Fran Kubelik in Promises, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Marian in The Music Man, Rosabella in The Most Happy Fella, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, Kathy in The Student Prince, Yum Yum in The Mikado.
She has performed with numerous orchestras, including The Boston Pops, Philadelphia Pops, Oklahoma City Symphony, Salt Lake City Symphony, The Nashville Symphony, and the Tokyo Philharmonic.
For 12 seasons she hosted her own one-hour series on the Discovery Channel called Home Matters.
Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum-selling, two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” is considered one of the premier interpreters of American standards. His 200-plus shows a year have included performances at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as The White House and Buckingham Palace.
Michael is a great supporter and fan of the Miss America Competition, having served on the judges panel in 1994 & 2007.
